Akeredolu Insists On Legalising Marijuana In Meeting With Buhari
After the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) destroyed 3900 hectares of marijuana, botanically known as Cannabis Sativa, in its "Operation Thunderstorm", in Ondo State, the Governor of the State, in South West Nigeria, Rotimi Akeredolu has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to legalize the sale and use of the plant.
The Governor made the call when he visited the President in Aso Rock Villa.
His argument is that the State would generate a revenue of over $145billion by 2025 is the cultivation and sales of marijuana if controlled by the State.
On his support for the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes, he pointed out that research has proved the efficacy of the oil extract from the plant in the treatment of various medical conditions.
According to him, many hospitals already apply on it patients with diseases like cancer and joint pains.
Akeredolu said the contentious Amotekun, the new regional security outfit being set up by the southwest states did not come up in his discussion with the president even though he is the chairman of the southwest state governors forum.
He, however, revealed that a meeting has been scheduled for Thursday between the governors and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to explore the way forward.
Therefore, the people of Ondo would be shortchanging themselves if they fail to tap into the legal marijuana market.
